Extending Your Program
The moment au pairs arrive in a new country, they dive into a whirlwind of adapting—getting familiar with the city, bonding with their host family, and finding their place in a new culture.
Then, as they reach the three-, four-, or six-month mark, a big question arises: “Do I want to extend for a second year? Yes, of course I do.”
Au pairs know that official extension information will come from the Extension Coordinator around their eighth month, but it’s never too early to start weighing the pros and cons of extending with their current host family versus joining a new one.

Extending with the Same Host Family
Staying with the same family can be a win-win! The au pair is already familiar with the city, has built a social circle, and understands the family’s routine. There’s a sense of comfort and stability in continuing with a host family that already feels like home.
Elisa from Germany has decided to extend with her current host family after successfully completing her first-year educational requirement at the University of San Francisco. During her time there, she met amazing friends and built strong friendships. “I really enjoy my time at the University of San Francisco. I can’t wait to start the fall semester so I can return to the classroom,” she shared.
Julia from Costa Rica is having a wonderful experience with her host family. She has formed a strong bond with the host children—two little girls, ages three and four—whom she considers her little sisters. Every Wednesday afternoon, they visit the playground in Charleston, South Carolina. “We do so many activities together, but visiting the playground in Charleston is our favorite,” Julia said
Extending with a New Host Family
On the other hand, the idea of a fresh adventure can be exciting. I found a great host family in Maine, where “I can visit the famous lighthouse and feast on lobster rolls—just like in the movies!” said Helena, an au pair who dreamed of experiencing a different part of the U.S.
Many au pairs use their second year to explore new horizons. Heloise found the perfect host family in Maui for her second-year program, and she now can experience the beautiful sunsets in Hawaii. “I can’t wait to share this video on social media!” she said.
Then there’s Suzi from Colombia, who felt an instant connection with her host family in Utah from their very first interview. “From the moment I arrived, it felt like home. They embraced me as part of their family,” she shared. Suzi knew early on that she wanted to extend with them, and now, in her second year, she’s already planning a future visit after she returns to Colombia.
Making the Right Choice
As you can see from these success stories, both options have their unique benefits.
Before making your decision:
✅ Talk to your host family about expectations.
✅ Consult your Local Coordinator for guidance.
✅ Review the pros and cons of both options.
No matter which paths you choose, your second year will be filled with unforgettable experiences and incredible memories!
