Mental Health

Living in a foreign country as an international exchange visitor can be an emotional experience for Au Pairs who are likely to experience Homesickness and Culture Shock during their program year. Hosts and Local Coordinators should be proactive in equipping Au Pairs to Cope with Stress. Everyone should Care for Yourself Each Day and utilize Mental Health Tools and Resources as needed.

Hosts and Au Pairs should discuss wellness and self care during their scheduled Weekly Meeting. Attending Monthly Meetings with the Local Coordinator is a great way for Au Pairs to connect with others in an emotionally supportive and safe environment.

Mental Health Information and Education

What Is Mental Health?

The health of a person’s mind and their thoughts, feelings, and actions.

What is Mental Well-Being?

Mental Health Well-Being is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to their community.

Create a Self-Care Plan

Being an au pair is a big adventure, but it can also be stressful. That’s why having a self-care plan is really important. Think of it like a map for your happiness! When you move to a new country, you might feel homesick or lonely. A self-care plan helps you remember to do things that make you feel good, like talking to friends back home, going for walks, or reading a book. If you take care of yourself, you’ll feel better, be a better au pair, and enjoy your time in the United States more. It’s like charging your battery – when you’re full of energy, everything is easier!
