How Our Au Pairs Celebrated Mother’s Day Around the World
Mother’s Day is a special time of year, but for an au pair, it can also be a day of mixed emotions. It’s a day spent celebrating the “second moms” who welcome them into their homes, while simultaneously feeling the pull of home across oceans and time zones.
This year, our au pairs showed us that distance is no match for love. Whether through technology, handmade crafts, or a simple hug, they found beautiful ways to bridge the gap.
Bridging the Distance
Whether you are traveling together or staying local, au pairs must receive a set schedule. While we know that vacation plans can change, providing your au pair with a written schedule is ideal. This ensures both the family and the au pair understand when they are on duty and when they are free to spend time independently.
The Magic of Handmade Gifts
Inside the host family home, the “au pair touch” was everywhere. Many of our au pairs teamed up with their host children to create something lasting:
- Monsserat (Mexico) and her host kids crafted a floral bouquet together.
- Vanessa (Ecuador) worked with her 21-month-old charge to create a special craft before preparing lunch for her host mom.
- Monsserat also helped the kids create a personalized painting—a keepsake her host mom is sure to treasure.
Finding Joy in the Small Moments
Sometimes, the most meaningful celebrations are the simplest. Aas (Indonesia) reminded us that even when schedules are busy, a small gesture goes a long way. Though her family was working, she left a gift and a card on the fridge for her host mom and received a heartfelt hug in return.
Navigating the Emotions
It’s okay to feel a little homesick! Monsserat shared a relatable truth: sometimes you need a little space to yourself in the morning to process the distance before diving into the festivities. By the afternoon, she was ready to enjoy a wonderful dinner with her host family.
Whether it was a “steak BBQ” with Cosmos or a cozy dinner at home with Vanessa, Mother’s Day 2026 was a beautiful reminder of the global bonds we are building. To our au pairs: thank you for the love you pour into your host families every day!
Helpful Host Family Tip:
Even if a holiday has passed, it’s never too late to ask your au pair how their family celebrates back home. It’s a great way to deepen your bond and show interest in their culture!
