Life in Washington DC
While in the US, all au pairs must complete six semester hours of higher education at an accredited post-secondary institution as part of J-1 visa requirements. Host families reimburse up to $500 for the cost of tuition and related materials including books and supplies.
All payments for tuition, books, fees, and materials that exceed the host family’s contribution are the responsibility of the au pair. If you do not use the complete amount, the education stipend is not paid to the au pair in cash. An au pair will not be able to extend their stay without first completing their educational requirement.
