The Adventure Awaits
Why Choosing the Au Pair Program Was My Best Decision 🌍
Thinking about applying to the US program but unsure if it will look good on your resume? Currently on the program but not sure how to use your au pair experience for the next steps in your life?
Agent Au Pair caught up with former au pairs to discover what they are doing now and how their au pair experience helped them in their current jobs, studies and personal life.
One may think that being an au pair will only be a break or gap year before ‘entering the real world’ or that it may only be good to improve language skills. However, some of our former au pairs will share with you that it is much more than that and that this experience will be teaching you many skills- from independence, problem- solving, flexibility and getting along with people from different backgrounds- which will be beneficial for your time after your program. Whether you will be looking to start or continue your career, plan to go back to school, start your own business or just to enjoy life and continue to travel, the skills and experiences you will have gathered in the US will be helpful in many aspects of life, way beyond just improving your language skills.
But let us find out what some former au pairs are doing now and how their experiences on the program have helped and shaped them and got them to where they are now!
What some of our previous au pairs said about their experience:
Becoming an au pair was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and it turned out to be the most enriching experience of my life. When I returned to my home country, Peru, I felt motivated to continue developing both personally and professionally. The transition—just like when I first arrived in the U.S.—was difficult at first, but I adapted quickly thanks to everything I had learned during my year abroad. Thanks to my au pair experience, many professional doors opened for me, and today I am proud of how much I have grown. Being an au pair not only allowed me to travel and learn English, but it also shaped the person and professional I am today.
– Jossy from Peru
The au pair program was the best thing to ever happen to me; I had the chance to travel all over the United States, I made so many new friends from all over the world and it helped me become more confident. I actually really miss my life in the United States and I’ve been thinking of joining the au pair program again. In the meantime, I’m just enjoying being with my family and friends!
– Paola from Italy
During all my years has a au pair the thing that i really feel i got better was at problem solving, because when you leave in others peoples house has nice and welcoming they might be problems will show up and i got way better at recognizing what the best solution is. Another thing that being an au pair helped me was to be able to adjust better in difficult situations. But overall being an au pair made me more resourceful, open minded and easygoing.
– Rui from Portugal
It actually helps me every day in my job. I work as an English teacher with kids and I got this job due to my experience in the Au Pair program.
A lot of skills I developed during that year, for example I got so much patience with kids and I improved my English skills.
– Daniela from Costa Rica
To be honest, this was the best decision I’ve ever made. My host parents were the best, they truly were my American parents, they learned me so much, they gave me the chance to find myself, to feel like spending time with the kids was like spending time my little brothers and didn’t. feel like it was work, at all. They are my family!
– Tina from France
I couldn’t recommend this program and for someone who maybe is unsure on what to do in life (especially if you are not wanting to go to uni) this is the best way to grow and learn more about yourself. I gained confidence in life and myself. And for my host family, my host dad was incredibly positive. He inspired me to look at the positive when times may be tough.
– Deanna from the United Kingdom
The AuPair program was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. And I’m not going to lie, it was hard but it helped me build character, be more spontaneous, open minded, confident and it definitely helped me find my voice.
Being an AuPair requires a lot of courage and commitment. Set clear goals, make plans and make sure you’ll go with the flow whenever they don’t turn the way you want them too, I’m sure that everything will work out at the end. And it will not only give you an experience in childcare, it will prepare you for life!

I also had some issues with the family especially at the beginning since we didn’t know each other and we had different habits, but after we had a conversation about our feelings and what we thought should change, things started to be very easy. They understood me, and i understood them. To be honest, i think this kind of thing is not for everyone, but for those who wants to punt themself into an other reality, world, thinking and especially be ready for an adventure.

I regret not extending my au pairing program for another year.
The program helped me believe in myself more, that I am capable of achieving anything I set my mind to: independence, a new language, and many anecdotes.
