Tips for Interviewing Au Pair Candidates
Agent Au Pair partners with agents around the world to carefully screen and interview our au pair candidates, but it’s important that you take your time and interview au pair candidates to find the right fit your family!
All interviews should be video chat – either facetime, skype, zoom, or whatsapp.
Tips for interviewing candidates:
We recommend having at least two interviews with the au pair candidates you feel could be a great match for your home. In the first interview, learn about their childcare experience, interests, and expectations. Then when you narrow down your candidate list, have additional interviews to spend more time getting to know your prospective au pair.
At least one of your interviews should include all of the members of your household that the au pair will be living with.
- Be mindful of the time difference
- Remember that she / he is probably nervous and excited. Make sure you speak slowly and choose your words carefully. Remember, the au pair might not be used to communicating in English.
- Ask open ended questions
- Stay away from yes or no questions
- Tell them a little bit about your family
- Tell them you would like to communicate honestly with each other so you have realistic expectations on if they’re going to be a good fit
- The au pair should ask their own questions
- If you would like to have a second interview with the candidate, share your household guide with them prior to scheduling the second meeting. Schedule a follow-up conversation if you’re interested in possibly moving forward with the match.
