The World’s Biggest Marathon

Au Pair Volunteering Opportunity

The U.S. State Department has invited our au pairs to volunteer at the NYC Marathon, to be held this year on Sunday, November 7, 2021. This is a unique opportunity to experience the American value of volunteerism with the added thrill of watching and cheering for runners from many countries!

Au Pairs and Local Reps who live locally in New York and New Jersey are highly encouraged to volunteer. Au pairs and Local Reps who live semi-locally in the neighboring states of Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia, and Massachusetts are encouraged to volunteer if able to do so. All other out-of-state au pairs are welcome to travel to NYC for this amazing opportunity!

Travel Ban Remains in Effect

On Monday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated in her press briefingSo, given where we are todaywith the Delta variant, we will maintain existing travel restrictions at this point for a few reasons. The more transmissible Delta variant is spreading both here and around the world. Driven by the Delta variant, cases are rising here at home, particularly among those who are unvaccinated, and appear likely to continue in the weeks ahead.

Flight bans are still in place for the Schengen area, Brazil, South Africa, China, the United Kingdom, Ireland, India, Iran, and the European Union countries. If your au pair is approved for the NIE, the flight ban does not apply and they should be able to directly travel to the US.

Au Pairs may be approved under the National Interest Exceptions (NIE). The NIE includes the travel by an au pair to provide childcare services for a child whose parents are involved with the provision of medical care to individuals who have contracted COVID-19 or medical research at United States facilities to help the United States combat COVID-19. If you think your family may qualify click here for the letter template.

Featured Monthly Meeting

This month we had a large group, combining the midwest au pairs and au pairs from many western states. We all shared fun facts or stories about ourselves!

Many au pairs shared funny stories about acclimating to life in the US and experiencing misunderstandings due to language barriers. One shared a story about asking her host mom for watermelon, but her host mom thought she was asking for “time alone”. Both women were very confused for a bit but laugh about it now!

Featured Local Rep

Alaina from Saint Paul, Minneapolis

My name is Alaina and I am originally from a small town in Wisconsin. I studied Communications at the University of Minnesota and spent time abroad in Italy and Thailand while in college. After college, I was an Au Pair for a summer near Milan, Italy.

I was drawn to the position as a Local Rep simply because I missed working with people from around the world. It is very valuable for me to be able to connect with others who have different backgrounds than me. I also wanted to support both Au Pairs and families together because I had an understanding of what that communication was like when I was an Au Pair.
