  Making Friends Abroad
Tips for Making Friends During Your Au Pair Year

Being an Au Pair is a great opportunity to get to know people from all over the world! Adapting to the language and culture of the United States can be challenging at first, and many au pairs feel homesick during their first weeks in the US. A great way to overcome homesickness and culture shock is sharing new experiences and talking about your feelings. It is also always nice to have another person with whom you can discover the area you live and travel with. But where can you make friends?

Here are some resources on how to meet new people:

  • Meet other au pairs at Au Pair School and Monthly Meetings
  • Enroll in classes for your educational component
  • Volunteer in your city and find friends who have similar interests
  • Join the Agent Au Pair Connections Facebook Group for Au Pairs from Agent Au Pair
  • Try Apps, such as Meetup and Nextdoor, where you can find people in your area who have similar hobbies, interests, or people attending events in your area
  • Meetup.com App- to find
people in the area who have similar hobbies and interests
  • Look for social media groups
(e.g. Facebook groups for Au Pair’s from all agencies who live within
    your area)

  Volunteering
The Importance of Volunteerism

Volunteering is a great way to get the most out of your experience in the United States while making new friends and helping others. Helping others can provide you with a sense ofpurpose. It doesn’t have to be a long-term commitment; volunteering for a few hours a week or month is a great way to enjoy volunteering instead of it feeling like a chore.
Our San Diego cluster au pairs volunteered for the 35th annual "I Love A Clean" San Diego beach clean up at the Cardiff Lagoon! One au pair said, "This is what I like about the U.S., you do things like this." Our au pairs and local rep were part of a team who removed over 140,000 pounds of waste and debris, planting trees, removing invasive species, painting murals and structures, and working shoulder to shoulder with your neighbors.

Why should you choose an au pair?
Agent Au Pair's Standards for Au Pair Candidates

Agent Au Pair pre-screens and holds their au pairs to the highest
standards. Our au pairs have at least 500 hours of childcare experience
and go through a rigorous admissions process that requires the au pairs
to complete a comprehensive background screening including verifiable
childcare experience and passing strict requirements to be accepted into
our program.
All potential au pairs must submit 2 non-family childcare references, a character reference, physician's report, proof of completion of secondary school, and a letter explaining why they want to be an au pair. Our screening process is set up to ensure that only the most mature, responsible, and caring individuals are accepted into the program.
